Saccharomyces cerevisiae („fission yeast”)

Schizosaccharomyces pombe („budding yeast”)

A photomicrograph shows two groups of yeast cells. The cells are fluorescently-stained and appear blue against a black background. Bright fluorescent circles inside the cells represent nuclear DNA. A scale bar at the bottom of the micrograph represents ten micrometers. A group of five oblong cells at left, each approximately five micrometers long, are fission yeast cells. A group of eight circular cells at right, approximately two to five micrometers in diameter, are budding yeast cells. Two of the eight cells are in the process of budding; they look like two circles attached to one another at one end. The point of attachment is a thin, indented region, as the cells are pinching apart.
